Tiffany Tucker - Founder of Redemption

Tiffany TuckerRedemption was founded by Tiffany A. Tucker, whose personal high school experiences increased her insight and her concern for students in underserved schools and communities. Tiffany shared her thoughts with six other likeminded students of color whose compassion and understanding helped lay a solid foundation for Redemption “Reclaim Rebuild Redirect”, Inc.

Tiffany is a graduate of Adelphi University with her degree in International Studies/Political Science (with a concentration in French). She decided to delay law school in order to work full-time fostering an organization that was responsive to the needs of the youth and their families in New York City’s urban communities.

Many youth based programs within and outside of Brooklyn work solely with students, ignoring the importance of parental involvement in the college process. Redemption supports and insists upon parental/ guardian involvement in a child’s educational development, thereby reinforcing the importance of familial support. Redemption addresses the following needs: increase the number of people of color in colleges and universities; integrate positive parental/adult involvement and support in the lives of our youth; motivate those who do not necessarily receive this support from their respective environments; and simultaneously provide students with mentors who have gone through the college application process and/or are attending college. Hampton Editor Blasts Administrators

by Mychal Smith -- Black College Wire

mychal smithI owe Hampton University an apology.

I'm not apologizing for saying "Hampton University hates black people." And I'm definitely not apologizing for consistently challenging the phantom organization known as "the administration."

What I must apologize for is thinking that, in the course of one year as editor in chief of the Script, I would be able to start the revolution that would somehow completely transform Hampton University. I thought I could expose all of the ills that trouble HU and, through the power of the written word, persuade the powers-that-be to change their evil ways.

That was stupid. Read more

Every One, Grab One

KIPP Academy - Work hard. Be nice. No shortcuts.

KIPP began in 1994 when two teachers, Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin, launched a fifth grade public school program in inner-city Houston, TX, after completing their commitment to Teach For America. In 1995, Feinberg remained in Houston to lead KIPP Academy Middle School, and Levin returned home to New York City to establish KIPP Academy in the South Bronx.

Since their founding, the original KIPP Academies have sustained track records of high student achievement. While fewer than one in five low-income students typically attend college nationally, KIPP’s college matriculation rate stands at nearly 80 percent for students who complete the eighth grade at KIPP. In addition, KIPP alumni have earned over $12 million in college scholarships.

Career Services Directors Offer Advice

William Carson Director, Center for Career Development Morgan State University

"Persistence is crucial. Be optimistic with a big splash of realism!"

William CarsonAdvice: The most important thing is researching the job and employer. The job process is also a marketing process. It is almost impossible to market a product (you, the job candidate) effectively unless you have a clear understanding of what the consumer (the employer) is willing to buy. Take an inventory of what you have to offer. As such, the resume is your primary marketing tool. Its primary objective is to get you an interview. So, you should have more than one version of your resume if you are going to be applying for more than one type of position. Avoid using "resume wizards" or other templates provided in popular software packages. The formats are usually poor and inflexible.

Once you have identified a company you might be interested in, develop a plan of attack. Maintain good records of where you've made contacts, what the outcomes were, and when you need to follow up. Remember, too, when asked what kind of job you are looking for, the answer is not the same as your major, unless it's a professional career like accounting. There is no occupation called political science.

The Mis-Education of African American Children

by Cheryl Donovan

Cheryl DonovanNothing saddened me more than the fact that three of my African American female students had no idea what the term "lynching" meant. These were otherwise, decently educated young black women seeking a career in the medical field.

During our exploration of medical ethics, we were watching a film about the "Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment" which took place in the 1930's. This experiment was responsible for the spreading of syphilis to thousands of African American people in Tuskegee, Alabama. Full Story
